DEFINITION

The register in which every AI capability the legal function operates is recorded with its current Lifecycle stage. The Portfolio view surfaces stage-balance and enables governance committees to see at a glance which capabilities are in Concept, Build, Deploy, Operate, or Sunset at any given time, preventing both under-renewal and governance over-extension.

Detailed Explanation

The Capability Portfolio is the institutional register that records every AI capability operated by the legal function, along with its current lifecycle stage: Concept, Build, Deploy, Operate, or Sunset.

The Portfolio view provides a stage-balanced perspective, allowing the governance committee to see at a glance how many capabilities sit in each stage at any given time. This supports:

  • Stage-balance discipline: avoiding under-renewal (e.g., having no capabilities in the Concept stage) and
  • Governance over-extension: preventing too many capabilities from being in the Build stage relative to the function’s operational and governance capacity.

The Portfolio is operated at corpus scale by the Capability Portfolio Architecture (SUS-10) module. It is refreshed on a quarterly Cadence (GOV-15) and serves as the source for the DPS capability-list-by-stage required element, ensuring downstream governance and reporting always reference an up-to-date, stage-resolved inventory of AI capabilities.

Use the Capability Portfolio as the single source of truth for which AI capabilities exist, what lifecycle stage they are in, and whether the overall portfolio is balanced across Concept, Build, Deploy, Operate, and Sunset.
